Understanding 2020

It is true that the more I understand the less I know
Peace is clearly more important than who is right
It is a precondition for cooperation.
We could do anything if we cooperate with each other.
We undo everything with war.
However much I know.
The scale of my ignorance is greater.
As the moon is further than the front door.

What gifts we have.
Yet we are at sea,
Droplets in an ocean of connected selves,
Striving against each other,
With all the wisdom of troops of baboons.
There have always been the barons.
Those fabulously rich for whom
The commoner is a cow to be milked
A tool to build with
A force to fight with.
Very little has changed.
Only the tools of control.

There have always been good people for whom
The commoner is a call for conviviality
A workmate to build with
A child to protect
Very little has changed
Only the stories told.

I can see where this is going
But even if I say to you
2+2 can never equal 5
You say, “never give up hope.”
If I say you should do better
You say, “Better than whom?
I’m no worse than many.”
If I say you should have less.
You will say, “Better to die
Than give up anything.”

It is not possible
To avoid being part of the problem
However green, red or blue, black, yellow, brown or white you are.
You are part of the problem
I am part of the problem.
So successfully clever
So abysmally not.

We have mustered the forces of nature
Like a herd of wild horses
Whipped into a stampede
And driven over a cliff.
We are the horses and the whip.
