Go beyond

Wise men from the East
Dangling fish from sticks
Recommend, that which is, is.

The drunken poet understood
The unacceptable inevitable
And raged against the darkening of the light.

A man will prevail
Because his will prevails
He will prevail.

Only a child, thumb in mouth
Can make a cave from arms, legs, chest
Retreat and live to fight another day.

The prize is lost
The field is empty of all
But the litter of a jeering mob.

A traveller stands perplexed still
On the wall the sacred letters read, “Go Beyond”
But before the wall the camp has become a city

And on a distant hill a woman ululates her despair.
